Born and raised in Zwaagdijk, Hauwert, in the heart of West Friesland (NH) with seven brothers and five sisters, I had a great childhood. There was always life and goings on around us.

From my childhood I remember that we spared tinfoil for the children in the mission. We had an aunt-missionary who worked there. This inspired me as a child and I dreamed about traveling overseas when I would be grown-up. In the sixth grade of elementary school we made a huge map of Africa, with all countries, still colonies then. Each country showed what minerals they had, where gold was found and diamonds. We made huts and palm trees and dreamed and fantasized about traveling overseas.

Around my 18th birthday I started traveling. I packed my rucksack and there I went. First with friends and later on my own. Cultures inspired me and I felt most at home among the indigenous population. I made many trips, roamed all over the world, wrote many letters and received via poste restante many letters from the home front.

From the beginning of the eighties, I was confronted with AIDS. It was dangerous and mysterious. People were afraid to talk about it, because  so little was known about it. I traveled a lot, which has probably been my luck. Then I grabbed my backpack, had a sort of farewell party in the pub during the last weekend with my mates and left again for nine months. When I came back and expected a welcome home again in the pub,  I found an almost empty pub. I asked my buddy, the bartender, "where is everybody" with a smile on my face.  He replied, "dead". In the early 90s it reached this peak and I saw many friends around me disappear. When I myself was detected to be HIV-infected  in 1994, I decided, for health reasons, to remain abroad.
In 2000 I returned to Amsterdam, where I began a secondary vocational study in 2001, Community work and Pedagogical work and I graduated cum laude. After that, I went to College to study cultural social education. I did this  part-time and also worked as a part-time square worker, teenage worker, youth worker in Dapperbuurt in Amsterdam, as a group leader in a youth prison and presently as a residential counselor at HVO Querido. I completed The Bachelor degree in August 2007. For the free study assignment I made an in-depth study of risk youth and wrote a thesis on it.

Following the book "25 stories AIDS in Africa by Stephanie Nolan," I started to delve into the youth culture of South Africa. Many children and youths are growing up without parents, with HIV and without medication. They lack that hand, that guidance, that makes them aware of  those limits and that hand, that teaches them to be self-reliant. They often do not work, have had no education, have no money and therefore cannot buy medicines. Then there is fear because your environment condemns you  when you have the disease. Many of them are therefore rejected by their family.

Research has shown that there is much fear of HIV / AIDS in Africa. This was also the case in the eighties with us, because  so little was known about it and because there was no medication. In Africa, this is the same, especially with the underprivileged. From personal experience I have learned that fear leads to stress and stress brings down your resistance. A low resistance creates the possibility to become ill.

Through my friendship with Wil, I ended up with the Will&DO Foundation, almost by accident in a way. I work for KLM and regularly come to South Africa. Because of this, I soon started to feel strongly connected to the foundation’s aim. Three months after Will had gone to South Africa I visited him there, so I could see what was happening and what was needed first hand.

Although I have been much involved with the AIDS epidemic in the west in the late 80s early 90s, that is not my main motivation. The development of HIV / AIDS in (South) Africa is much different from where we live. The poverty, the unavailability of the right medicines and the taboo prove to be important factors in the spread of HIV. Cultural background also plays a major role.
I combine work for Will&Do with work for projects by Wings of Support (organization of KLM staff) in South Africa to learn what is a suitable method in this country to use our resources from this knowledge as effectively as possible .

With my board position for Will and Do I follow in the footsteps of my mother who has been committed for years to the Foundation for Small-Scale Development Projects (CUP) in Senegal.

Wil Groot asked me to join the Will&DO board just before the establishment of the Foundation. The enthusiasm with which he tried to set up this charitable organization, thus contributing to the fight against AIDS and HIV in South Africa,  was contagious.

In addition to my position on the board I keep mainly engaged in the website. The current website is already the second version now since the start and we are trying to present. Information concerning the foundation as clearly as possible.

Outside of work for Will & Do I keep myself busy with designing jewelry, and especially wedding rings. Again, I take care of the graphic works.

I hope  to be able to offer a modest contribution to Will&Do with my work and thus create better living conditions in South Africa.
