Millennium development goals
In 2000 the heads of state of 189 countries signed the Millennium Declaration. The goal of this pact is to significantly reduce poverty, diseases and hunger in the world before 2015. This goal has been divided into eight concrete Millennium Development Goals that include reducing underfeeding, improving education and improving the environment in development countries, amongst others. The goals are very ambitious and may not be achieved in full given the progress to date, but there have been many successes and it is important to keep working towards achieving these goals.
Millennium Development Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other diseases.
As a charity organisation we can contribute to achieving this goal. ‘Will Do'’s objectives closely align with this Millennium Development Goal in particular.
Our projects also contribute to other Millennium Development Goals:
Millennium Development Goal 1: Reduce Hunger & Extreme Poverty by half.
We have learnt that medicine does not work when patients are underfed. The battle against AIDS is also a battle against poverty and underfeeding. At our project in the Transkei we have noticed that this goal is what we need to devote our efforts to in particular.
Millennium Development Goal 2: Universal Education.
In our work with homeless youths and providing shelter for AIDS orphans education is essential. In the townships alcohol and substance abuse is widespread, offering temptations to youths that education can counter.
Millennium Development Goal 4: Child Health.
Transmission of HIV from mother to child during childbirth can often be prevented by administering the right drugs. This is one of the ways in which we contribute to reducing the infant mortality rate in our projects.
